Building Structures / Portfolio

The Building Structure module covers principles of selecting appropriate structural systems and designing elements and structures, an introduction to structural analysis, deflections, structural design as well as the application of structural design codes including loading codes.

This module aims to introduce an understanding of the structural system as part of construction technology and to be able to visualize structural loading’s action and reaction, followed by quantification through simple mathematical analysis.

Roof Truss System / 01

Project 1 aims to develop our understanding on the potential of truss system in the design and its force distribution. In a group of five, we are to select the design of the Visitor Interpretive Centre from Design Studio 3 and re-design the roof of that building by using truss designs.

We explore different arrangement of members in a truss structure and eventually construct a model of the design. An A2 panel presentation board is also prepared to showcase the roof truss design, building drawings and connection details of the truss.

In addition, a side exercise of this project is a roof truss analysis where each member analyzes one of six different truss arrangement for the load system through calculations. I was assigned to conduct analysis on Case 4 through calculations and lastly, we determine the most effective system in a compilation of a report shown below.

Structural Analysis of a Bungalow / 02

Project 2 involves structural theory, force calculation and basic structural proposal to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of a building structure. The assignment is divided into two parts; the first part in a group of three while the second part is an individual work.

For the first part, we are to design a two-storey bungalow comprising different spaces within a combination of four building outlines given for each floor. We then carry out structural framing for the building and prepared building plans, structural plans and load distribution plans.

Part 2 of the assignment is an individual component where we are required to analysis six beams subject to different types of load and three columns from roof to foundation level through calculations.

Lastly, both parts of the assignment are compiled and prepared in an A4 report consisting all drawings, design brief of the bungalow, and beam and column analysis sections.
