Computer Applications / Portfolio

This module has introduced students to the world of Computer Generated 3-Dimensional drawings. Us as students are given opportunity to experiment with different modelling tools, such as Rhino, 3DS Max, etc. We're also taught the potential of ‘‘cross breeding’’ different softwares, in order to garner the necessary desired results for our visualisation work.

Modelling of an Architectural Design / 01

Our first project involves completion of basic form and external model of a selected architectural design.

We're required to create a 3D model of our selected architectural design using 3DS Max or Rhino or both without materials or lighting. As for me, I've chosen my Studio 2 Final Project design to experiment by using Rhino.

During this stage the completed 3D model will reflect the knowledge of using the software to create 3D geometries. 3D models will be assessed on the overall detail, complexity and creativity used in the creation and development process.

Still Rendering with Materials, Lights & Site Context: Exterior Renderings / 02a

Our second project involves the production of photorealistic still rendering of the selected architectural design with materials, appropriate camera views and post-production enhancement on the visual outcome.

Using the same model from Project 1, we are required to add in lights, cameras, and site context for final rendering. Project 2 is divided into 2 parts, both exterior and interior. As for the exterior renderings, we are to produce 1 eye level + 1 bird's eye view or 2 eye level views.

Still Rendering with Materials, Lights & Site Context: Interior Renderings / 02b

After we have rendered the exterior of our selected building, now we're tasked to render its interior details with lights, cameras, furniture and human characters in order to make the renderings look more photo-realistic.

As for the interior renderings, we are required to produce 2 eye level views of the interior of the building.

Animation of the Completed 3D Scene / 03

After we have rendered both exterior and interior of our selected building, now we're tasked to render a short animation of the completed 3D scene. The animation needs to be rendered using 3DS Max's animation commands and tools.

We can use any video editing software to edit the clips after rendering them. As a beginner, I've chosen to use iMovie as it's very user-friendly. Since the animation is pretty short, around 60-90 seconds, I want it to look like a Retreat Advertisement, a short getaway that I want to go, release and update myself, far away from the concrete jungle. Thus I added some catchy phrases to make it looks like an ad.

For me, this project is quite challenging, in terms of balancing both rendering time and the animation's quality, but I'm glad that I've learnt a lot throughout the semester. From knowing nothing about computer modelling software, to creating short animation that I could never believe I can. I'll strive for more improvements in my upcoming semesters. :)
