Design Studio 3 / Portfolio

Architectural Design Studio 3 is a continuation from Design Studio 2. This studio emphasizes on the poetics of place and the experiential qualities of space in architecture. In this subject, we are introduced to, firstly, an exploration of spatial typologies and poetics in architecture; and secondly, the concept of neighborhood and community.

In our preliminary design work, we are to engage with literature studies and interpretation as well as translating into design of different spatial typologies which explore the idea of architectural tectonics and experiences.

Subsequently, the major project involves the design of a small scale community building in the suburban condition which engages with the spirit of place inherent within the site, the site topography, history and socio-cultural events. The design work explores the plan-section integration to achieve architectural form that is tectonically expressive, functional and responsive to its site.

Journey of the 5 Senses / 01

Our first project is an introductory project that calls for the design of a hypothetical ‘walkway’ space that explores spatial typologies and poetics in architecture. The project is divided into 2 parts:

Precedent Studies: Analyzing Spatial Poetics & Spatial Typologies in Architecture / 01a

The main aim of Project 1 is to introduce different spatial typologies in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience through precedent studies. Working in a group of 5, we’re to analyze and compare 2 selected architectural precedents.

Exploring Spatial Typologies & Poetics: Poetic Architecture / 01b

As for Project 1b, we’re tasked to design 2 walkways, 1 linear and 1 concentric based on our interpretation of a poem/short story and song lyric.

Our concentric walkway is designed based on the poem that we’re given is ‘A Dog Has Died’; whereas the linear one is inspired from the well-known childhood story ‘Pinocchio’. This is a really fun project, we enjoyed the process of rewinding the poem and breaking down the story into different parts over and over again to get inspirations. We also get to explore spatial typologies and poetics through the design of a simple space within a hypothetical site.

Genius Loci: Site Analysis and Design Concept / 02

The second project for the module calls for a design of a design concept developed as a response to a given site. This project consists of 2 parts:

Discovering The Site & Its Genius Loci / 02a

The first assignment for Project 2 requires an analysis of the site context as a starting point. It is a fundamental need for any design project as it will suggest a series of parameters to suggest architectural solution, one that will be appropriate to the place and its meaning, and contributes to its context.

In the same group from Project 1, we’re required to conduct a thorough site analysis of the physical context within the identified MACRO & MICRO sites.

Site Response & Design Concept / 02b

The second part of Project 2 requires us to develop a strong, individual design concept grounded in a personal site response for a Visitor Interpretive Centre, derived from the site analysis conclusions gathered in groups via Assignment 2a.

For this project, we’re to show how our conceptual ideas / design strategy and its development into a design scheme works and how it is responsive to the context.

Besides, it’s important to show how the design has been developed into an “Experiential space” taking into account the considerations of users, context, function and experience.

Visitor Interpretive Centre (VIC) / 03

In Project 3, the design brief calls for an architectural response to design a Visitor Interpretive Centre emphasizing a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences and programmatic requirements.

The interpretive centre will serve two purposes:

  1. To provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture/history/memory/essence of the site;

  2. To provide accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.

Solutions relying heavily on landscape are encouraged. Visitors should be inspired and informed in ways that somehow express the spirit of the place (genius loci).

The project should apply the knowledge gained from Project 1 and 2, particularly organizing and articulating spaces and the sensuality and poetics of space to inform user’s experiences within the architecture. Emphasis is given to design resolution integrating site, program and spatial poetics.
