Design Studio 6 / Portfolio
Semester 6 forms the culmination of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Architecture programme. This capstone project is based on the theme of architecture with a social impact and the resolution and integration of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design.

Progressing from the urban issues of urban street environment, the design studio extends students development of architectural position and design brief in proposing strategy to resolving social issues pertinent to the conditions of the urban landscape (for example, elderly, neglected communities, school, youth center, woman empowerment, skills training center and others).
Located in an urban area, students are to further develop the site through an area chosen by their design supervisors, in which it will address the social needs of a particularly urban place and provide interaction and connection of people in the urban spaces. Subsequently, students are to produce a detailed design of a selected portion of the scheme. The design work is to be supported by a comprehensive design report.
Pre-Design Analysis / 01​
Students are required to conduct and present the following pre-design analysis:
1. Studies of the contextual conditions of your site
2. Studies on your selected user group and building types
3. Studies on the cultural and meaning place.
4. Studies on the current restrictions and proposed development on site and how it will affect the project and design.
5. Studies on precedents that inform the ideas/approach/strategies that can be used in developing project and programme.
Based on the pre-design phase, develop a simple, brief and yet comprehensive presentation. Presentation can be in a form of video, slide and others that can capture people, place and time on the given site.​​

Pre-design analysis, is where students will assemble all the parts and pieces of the bigger picture:
1.Reviewing building code and local or city ordinance.
2. Initiative on establishing design parameters.
3. Take initiative consider and study solar analysis and other site specific analysis.
4. Research on precedents or do actual visitation to projects related and directly relevant to the proposal.
5. Research on demography, user profile and understanding who we are designing for.
There are several guidelines that provide the scope of your proposed project as follows:
1. 3-5 stories/levels (basement car parking does not count).
2. 1800-2000 sq.mts. built up area (gross floor area).
3. Proposals are to be taken from 3 suggester building typologies.
4. Parking lot/layout (based on Uniform Building By-Laws and Local requirements).
5. Compliance with city planning or local guidelines and requirements.
6. Shall tackle and address the issue on site and look forward to aligning design addressing the needs of the site and user.

The project, the Aquatic Recreation Center, was conceived as a result of a thorough study of the site, with the aim of being to understand the human patterns, characteristics, issues, and strong points that the site may possess.
From these findings, an issue was deducted and to be addressed which would aim to complement the existing site. Ultimately, a center of games and recreation was thought out as the findings suggest that the site as well as the city of Kuala Lumpur itself lack any suitable viable concrete alternatives to pockets or locations of public space that provide necessary nature relief to the urban dwellers. Hence, the design language, programs on offer as well as the landscaping of this project is aimed to be as natural as possible, with maximum possible use of trees, green landscaping, water features as well as accommodation of sunlight and wind.
The contextual response was implemented with the Tasik Titiwangsa running parallel to the site being incorporated into the experience of the building and space within the site for the target users. This approach to design was also conceived as a result of the need to adhere to the theme of ‘Sustaining Humanities’ which was the aim of the project.

Objectives:​

Develop awareness in the mediation between socio-cultural needs, the desires of internal spaces and the demands of external constraints pertaining to the broad theme of ‘Sustaining Humanities’.

Develop student’s own position in architectural thinking and design.

Consolidate an understanding of the holistic nature of the architectural design process, to a given degree of detail with emphasis on design as an integrative process, drawing as appropriate on previous subjects if the program.
Learning Outcomes:

Produce designs at appropriate complexity and scales up to the schematic level using appropriate communication tools.

Demonstrate understanding of cultural, historical and established architectural theories, philosophies and context.

Demonstrate creativity, innovation and imagination and translate these into an architectural design solution.

Develop design to a level for regulatory application for Building Plan submission that complies to the requirements of local authorities, including understanding of building regulations, basic building construction and materials, environmental considerations and building services.

Translate design into construction drawings with appropriate construction details and use established architectural drawing convention.

Work in a team and participate in the design process.
